FINE WIN IN LORRAINE Red Star pulled off a fine 1-0 victory away at Metz reserves yesterday, in a closely-fought encounter. It took Red Star only one minute to open the scoring, when Mickaël Marquet got on the end of a Jérmy Lux cross to fire the ball home. Despite some presure from the home side, Red Star hung on for the win and indeed should have wrapped the game up in the second half as the Metz youngsters wilted somewhat. However some indifferent finishing from Lux and Moukila kept the score at 1-0. Red Star have a break in championship action next weekend but will face ACBB from Boulogne-Billancourt in a Coupe de Paris tie, kick off 6pm CET at Stade Bauer.

With coach Sébastien Robert in reserve team duty, Eric Santamaria took over the hot seat as the under 18s team coach for the game against Saint-Denis. Despite the handicap of being one man short following a red card, Red Star took the lead in the second half only for Saint-Denis to be stung into action, where they equalised. Final score 1-1.

VIP AT BAUER Popular French actor Gérard Depardieu was a VIP visitor at Stade Bauer yesterday evening. Depardieu, star of such films as Asterix, Jean de Florette and Germinal is a friend of a friend of Red Star supremo Bruno Davoine and made a promise to visit Bauer earlier this season. He is particularly interested in the social aspect of the club, which aims to provide a future for youngsters from difficult social backgrounds. As part of the renovation of the club, the actor wishes to be a help in restoring Red Star to where it belongs in the hierarchy of French football.

CHRISTOPHE HAGUY Christophe is still in hospital folowing injuries received on Saturday at Bauer in a collision with his own goalkeeper. It's a case of better safe than sorry so Christophe is being kept in hospital for observation at least until the end of the week.
Next game for Red Star is a Coupe de Paris tie on Sunday afternoon in the leafy suburbs of Taverny, where Red Star meet our old friends from the DH days Cosmo Ermont Taverny. Since our last meeting back in 2005 both sides have experienced mixed fortunes; for Red Star two promotions up to the CFA, whereas Cosmo, whom always proved to be a thorn in the side of the Audoniens, have been relegated twice and now languish in the DHR, one division below Red Stars' reserves. This season is also proving to be a tough one for the club from the Val d'Oise whom lie bottom of their division, having drawn one and lost four of their opening five games this season. However in a cup tie Red Star must never take an opposition too lightly, and it has to be said that in two visits to the Stade de Boissy, Red Star have only scored one goal and that was a penalty. Kick off on Sunday is 3pm CET and will be chance for several first-team fringe players to make a name for themselves.

LATEST NEWS Red Star earned a hard-fought draw with Vesoul on Saturday evening at Bauer. The visitors, reputed for their excellent away record took the lead in the second half, somewhat against the run of play. Fortunately for Red Star captain Eugène Kangulungu earned a draw with a headed goal not long after. At the end of the game young full-back Christophe Haguy was stretchered off following a collision with goalkeeper Mohamed Diakité, in for Yoann Djidonou, away on international duty with Benin. Christophe was taken to hospital in Paris with breathing troubles following he chest injury received. Our best wishes go to Christophe and hope to see him back in action soon.

CUP KO. Red Stars' cup trail to the Stade de France proved to be a tad shorter than expected, coming to an abrupt end at Ivry on Saturday evening. Former Red Star striker Khaled Kemas, whom only played due to an acute shortage of strikers at Ivry proved to be the thorn in the side of his former team mates, earning a very dubious penalty in the first period of extra time. The game had ended one goal apiece, Loïc Ghili equalising for Red Star in the second half after the home side had taken an early lead. Unfortunately for coach Bruno Naidons' men, a series of chances went begging and as a result Ivry from the CFA 2 progress into the hat for the next round draw.

The game will probably be best remembered not for Red Stars' exit but for the unpleasant atmosphere generated by the fixture, which opposed Red Star with the club now managed by former Red Star director Michel Castejon. For memory, Castjon was at the helm of the good ship Red Star as it sailed to oblivion at the end of the 2002-2003 season. A series of unusual decisions taken by the club that season only helped to widen the gulf between the club management and the supporters.
For those of you whom have the habit of paying somewhat inflated prices for lower-league football, ten euros might not seem to be expensive to pay to see a game in France. However, admission prices here are generally much lower, especialy for amateur football. For example at Bauer, prices are five and three euros for what is effectively fourth division football. So, Ivry decided to fleece the fans for ten euros. Red Star have a large travelling support (ok, relatively speaking for France) so in addition the entrance fee, the snack bar should also have been fairly well patronised.
In the face of what appeared to them to be blatent opportunism, Red Stars' supporters refused to pay the ten euros admission price, preferring to wait until half time when the gates would be opened for free. So Ivry, the ones whom fix entrance prices, must have lost out on the day.

THIS WEEKEND. The Coupe de France trail leading to the Stade de France starts for Red Star this weekend, and could possibly be a short one this season, given that their opponents are the highly-motivated US IVRY. The club from the south-east of the Paris region currently play in the CFA 2, but have invested in the hope of achieving promotion to the CFA come May. Last seasons' Red Star striker, Khaled Kemas, once of Motherwell FC in Scotland is now with Ivry, but injury means that he will miss Saturdays' clash with his former team-mates. No doubt Khaled wil be in the stands to encourage his new club.

Khaled Kemas

You can see Khaled in action last season in the Red Star shirt, scoring a wonder goal against Vitré in the 110th birthday game: Go !
For Red Star, goalkeeper Yoann Djidonou will miss the cup game due to international commitments with Benin. His replacement should be reserve team goalie, Mohamed Diakite. Saturdays' game, which will be officiated by William Royer assisted by Lionel Mazurier & Cédric Pélissier, kicks off at 6pm CET. Ivry last met Red Star in a competitive game back in 2003, when they drew 1-1 in a game marred by the injury to goalkeeper Kamel Bousseliou; an injury which ended the playing career of the ex-Aubervilliers goalkeeper. Note also that the last match Red Star played at Stade Marville before moving back to Bauer in October 2002 was against Ivry, the visitors running out 2-0 winners in a poor game to close a painful chapter in the history of Red Star. One of Red Stars' directors at that time was Michel Castejon whom now, incidentally is on the board at Ivry. Former Red Star player Djebrane Abda is also plying his trade with the club from the Val de Marne.
On the subject of former players, Kaba Diomande, now with Villemomble in the National (D3) is going through a difficult start to the season at this level; Villemomble are currently bottom of the table with just one win to their name. A couple of places above lie Pau, coached by former Red Star coach Jean-Luc Girard. Last seasons' Red Star captain Vincent Fourneuf has fallen out of favour somewhat in the Bearn, and is currently out of the first eleven. Slipping down the table are Entente Sannois-Saint-Gratien, featuring striker Davidson Charles. After a blinding start, where Davidson was scoring goals at will, Entente are currently going through a difficult period and will have to act fast to stop the rot.

RUN COMES TO AN END Red Stars' winning run came to an abrupt end on Saturday in the east, when hosts Belfort ran out winners 2-1. The visitors were left chasing the game after the home side scored two goals in seven minutes. After only ten minutes of play, Red Stars' defence was sliced open by a rampant attack, and history repeated itself meaning that Red Star faced an uphill task. After the break Moussa Ouattara pulled one back, but despite dominating affairs, Bruno Naidons' men were left to rue the disastrous start.
Back in the line up was the combative Jérémy Lux, back after serving a six-match suspension following an opening day red card at Jura Sud Foot. Lux was booked before the break and coach Naidon was forced later in the game to substitute Lux before the striker saw yellow again. Noël Moukila missed the game through illness and Hernane Cavaleiro, with a good chance for making his first team debut also pulled out of the game through a stomach bug.

Red Star have a break from league action next weekend, the Coupe de France 4th round in on the menu. Note that the draw will be made this evening, and we will inform you as soon as possible of Red Stars' opponents.
Elsewhere this weekend, Red Stars' reserves came back from being 2-0 down at home to Saint-Ouen l'Aumône to earn a 2-2 draw, the goals scored by Loïc Ghili and Elysée M'Banza. The game finished much later than normal, due to injuries to both goalkeepers in separate incidents. In the first half Red Stars' Mohamed Diakité received a knock on the head but managed to play on after lengthy attention. Later on in the game, the visitors' custodian was carried off with a leg injury following a collision with Red Stars' H. Ali, for which the striker received a red card, rather harshly it appears.
