Trivia: Auxerre will always be linked with the name of Guy Roux, firstly as a player then as the long-term coach of a small provincial town club that from humble beginnings reached the heights of the Champions' League a few seasons ago. AJA is one of the few French clubs that actually own their own ground and it has to be said that the facilities there are pretty impressive. The reserves play on a pitch adjacent to the main arena, and there is a decent-sized grandstand to keep the Burgundy elements at bay. The stand, incidentally was recovered from the main arena during the improvement works necessary when the club hit the big time. Both of Auxerres' reserves are hard to beat teams, which is a testament to the youth policy of this club. Red Star sold young striker Steve Marlet to Auxerre.
The town, just over a hundred miles from Paris, is worth a visit and is a useful base from which to discover a pretty region of the country famous for its wine production.
