THE CLUB

Rouen have had something of a roller coaster ride over the last few years. Two years ago the club was in the second division before two consecutive relegations plunged the club into the CFA.
One year older than Red Star, Rouen were formed in 1896 by a businessman who had spent some time in England. The club was originally a rugby club. In 1899 Robert Diochon transformed the club into an association football club. In 1910 the club made their name when they became Champions of Normandy. Their stadium, the Stade des Bruyères became the Stade Robert Diochon. Three times cup semi-finalist in the 1920s, in 1925 they reached the final only to lose to CASG over two matches. Turning professional in 1933, one year after the other French clubs, and in their first outing thrashed their first opponents 12-3 ! In 1936 the club won promotion to D1 with seven internationals. The stadium was improved to have a capacity of 20 000 spectators. The club stablilised a little in D2, with the odd foray into the elite, including an Inter Cities Fairs' Cup in the sixties. Since then Rouen have experienced financial difficulties, at one point dropping into the DH before their recent rise to the D2. The main stand has been modernised, but the rest of the ground still requires some attention.
Three former Red Star men have tried their hand at coaching Rouen : Edmond Delfour, Laurent Roussey, Patrice Heaulmé, and today the reserves are coached by former goalkeeper Régis Roch.
