The club owes its existence to a worker in the Dunlop factory. The stadium carries the name of the tyre company that was for many years principal sponsor of the club.
A third division clubfor many seasons before achieving promotion to the second divison in 1970. They remained in D2 until 1976, then again from 1978 to 1982 coached by René Gardien.
After everal seasons languishing in D3, Montluçon dropped to the fifth tier of French football in 1997-98, before climbing back to the CFA, in 2005-2006
Arguably one of the most famous names to have plaed for the club is Gérard Hallet, amateur international whom took part in the Olympics and asa pro played for Paris SG, Paris FC & Auxerre.

MONTLUCON v RED STAR
During the season 1975-1976, the two sides met in the D 2; Red Star lost 1-2 on their travels but won the home fixture in Saint-Ouen : 2-0
