RED STAR POORLY

We musn't avoid the issues - Red Stars' first team are bad. At the start of the season, we mentioned the syndrome of Paris FC last season, and it is really happening. Lots of money spent, to little or no effect, and a poor side lacking in confidence beaten by an indifferent Istres side in an indifferent match. Our correspondant present at Istres, Stéphane, witnessed an execrable performance from a team with pre-season grand ambitions of promotion.

A season off to a calamitous start, with a change of coach only days before the big kick-off. The debacle around the arrival and subsequent departures of Cascarino and Girardot not to mention the fiasco over Serreau and Leugueun. The departure of Fousseni Diawara to Saint-Etienne, lthe arrivals after the seasonstarted of Saxemard, Traoré and Ferhaoui. The imminent departure of Brahim Thiam to England. Red Star, after the exceptional cup runs last season have lost four key elements of that side : Fellahi, Doukantie, Meïté and Valéri in addition to Akiana and Ludo Mary, who are now playing in a higher level of football. One could very well say that the recruitment has been a flop.

Saturday evening at Istres, Red Star missed the boat again and slumped again, the sixth defeat since the beginning of August. The Southerners weren't that sparkling, just that they appear to have a solid defence (three goals conceded in nine matches). It only took a moment of weakness, after a quarter of an hour of play, with Istres defender Savry opening the way for Akrour to glance a header on for Tabet to bury the ball past Branger. Game set and match to Istres, three points and nothing for Red Star. In ninety minute the attack did nothing to worry home goalkeeper Quiévreux, except for a chance for Patrick Van Kets in stoppage time. Van Kets received nothing in the way of support or feed throughout the encounter.
Next Saturday, Red Star are playing for league survival, with only a quarter of the league campaign elapsed.
