RED STAR SMOTHERED BY BREST

A gratuitous throwaway headline to accompany a throwaway match. A first half completely wasted, and a furious Jean-Luc Girard at half time. Red Star left the field at half-time lucky to be only two goals in arrears. The home side could only muster two attacks worthy of the name before the pause; a Van Kets header after a quarter of an hour and a shot wide by Aïchour, on the half an hour. Brest absorbed the pressure and looked a class above. On twelve minutes, Branger fouled Moreira in the area and the latter converted his spot kick. Every Brest attack brought danger and panic in the Red Star defence, behind a non-existant midfield. Brest virtually did as they pleased and doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when a poor clearance was returned to a lone Moreira in the area, and he made no mistake placing his header wide of Branger. Just before the break a lob by Lerand rattled the crossbar.
Also rattled was Girard, and he vented his spleen to the effect of making the players re-emerge for the second period with spirits and heads hung low. Thiam failed to reappear, carrying an injury and Natchimie took his place. After ten minutes of so Brest had a golden opportunity to put the game beyond Red Stars' grasp, but somehow the home side resisted and finally stung themselves into action. Laurent CASTRO on the hour powered a wonderful free-kick home to reduce the arrears. Red Star press Brest, and ythe introduction of Randget for Castro and Milton for Ferhaoui began to pay dividends. Milton floated a center across for SACI on 79 minutes, and the latter beat Cado to equalise. A match neatly poised, Brest let slip another good chance before Faye rasped a thirty-yard drive and narrowly failed to give the three points for an improbable Red Star win.
The Audoniens managed to pull out a result which seemed to be impossible at half time. One day Red Star will start to play at Marville without the handicap of being two goals down. All is required now is a couple of good wins. But from where ? As Gracie nearly sang, "We'll win again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll win again some sunny day...". Can the supporters keep smiling through ?
