WASTED SEASON

2-0, 2-1 … since the game against Racing at the end of December, most Red Star games appear to be either one of these two scores, and always against Red Star. On Friday it was the turn of 2-0. With the defeat go virtually the last hopes of saving our skins in the National. Like a wounded beast in its death throes, the rest of the season looks as if it is going to be interminably long.

All eys must be turned now to the future of the club and towards building a side capable of winning the CFA. Finishing top is vitally important as only one club can be promoted from the CFA.

For this trip to the east, Pierre Repellini called up youngster Macedo Gomes Varela (as announced exclusively on this site !). Straight out of the under-17s, semi-finalists in the French junior championship last season, he only waited three minutes before firing a shot against an upright. Perhaps if he had scored the outcome might have been different. But, last week Red Star opened the scoring against Reims only to fall 1-2 at the end. But, just before the pause on Friday, sweeper (!) Kader Ferhaoui conceded a free-kick and from the resulting kick chaos ensued and the ball was bundled over the line by Sébastien Marchandé.

A fatal blow to a fragile team, and substitute Thierry Perrot doubled the lead and Red Stars' agony ten minutes from the end.
