IF ONLY...

It took the very last game of the season to get Red Star to prove what they are capable of doing. Cynics might point to the fact that the visitors had already booked their place in the National for next season, and it was after all an end-of-season fixture with no significance, but no professional footballer likes to lose, and with next seasons' plans starting to take form, and players coming to the end of their contracts and trying to attract the attention of new clubs, then there is always something in a game of football.

Whatever, Red Star deserved this one, but it could all have been so different. On nine minutes Heitzman for the visitors had the home supporters going "here we go again", finishing a smart passing move clinically. Red Star came back into the game, but missed several good chances and had one goal disallowed for offside, but had to wait until the 28th minute before HUTTEAU equalised with his first goal of the season, thumping home a rebound.

Short lived joy, as only two minutes later Ducloux beat Itandje with a well-taken free kick, bending it around the wall into the corner of the net. Just before the break, with Red Star dominant, Patrick VAN KETS opened his account, and drew the scores level. (2-2).

After the break, Red Star changed things around, bringing on Jolibois and Traoré for Natchimie and the tiring Saragaglia. For once an inspired move as Red Star ran riot against Louhans defence. Firstly Yoan RANGDET gave Red Star the lead, then VAN KETS made it four before RANGDET finished off the scoring. Even then it was not completely over, as substitute Price Jolibois came close, rapping the post after a fine run.

So the season draws to close, bitter disappointment after the movements of last Summer, and all the promises made. The end of another era... we say goodbye to the National, to professionalism and also to loyal club servant, Louis Goya, who received a standing ovation at the end of the game.
