BESANÇON - OPPONENTS OF RED STAR 93

RACING CLUB BESANÇON

Racing Club Besançon

The surprise package at the start of last season, Besançon are considered as a good bet for this season. The club hopes once again to reach D2, last visited in 1986. Little by little the slub is rebuilding, including the old Stade Léo Lagrange, where the capacity has recently been raised to 7 000 places.
A bad start to this season, however, with two consecutive defeats, but both on their travels at Istres and La Roche-sur-Yon. Following a win against Valenciennes, the side coached by Sylvain Matrisciano went doan to Dijon before managing a draw at home to Pau.
Born out of the ashes of the defunct club of 1986, Racing follow on from a club formed in 1904, becoming professional in 1945 and staying in D2 up to its demise. In 1962 Besançon won the Coupe Drago, a sort of consolation trophy for clubs knocked out of the French Cup. In 1951 and 1978 the club narrowle missed out on promotion to D1 in the end-of-season play-offs.
