THE PAST

Jean-Marc Authié

Association Sportive d'Origine Arménienne de Valence was formed as a result of a merger in June 1992 between FC Valence who at that time played in D3 after one season in D2 (1984-85) and the Union Sportive de la Jeunesse d'Origine Arménienne who were promoted into D2 in June 1992. Since then, Valence have played in D2, avoiding the drop into the National, in extremis in May 1999 due to the refusal of promotion for GFCO Ajaccio, but in May this year finally fell.

Many departured accompanied the descent. Early days in the National have been difficult to swallow, defeat coming after defeat. The poor start led to a change of caoch, and the arrival at the helm of Didier Notheaux. The latter has already had a spell in charge (1993-1995) and his experience has enabled the club to climb to 12th spot. The target of a rebound back into the D2 is far off now, but a partnership deal with Montpellier should allow Valence to have one further season of professional status.
