AU REVOIR, RED STAR

Following last weeks' first winning double of the season, Red Star managed to avoid their first losing double of the season at the hands of Viry. The home side, looking for a draw to seal promotion to the National managed the task, but must show more striking prowess if they are to avoid a quick return from whence they did came.
Viry managed a goal-less draw at Avion last week, and this week followed up with a sterile performance in front of Fabrice Bruneau. In the second half alone they must have had at least seven good opportunites to bury the game, but each time panicked in front of Red Stars' undisputed player of the season. Right at the end Gomes-Varela had a golden opportunity to break the hearts of the locals but took far too long over his shot giving the defence time to hack the ball clear. Each time the reds surged forwards, at time playing some lovely passing football, they came up against a solid unyielding yellow wall. At the other end, Red Stars' offside trap held up, and frustrated Viry.
So, end of the season, and it was the Viry supporters swarming onto the pitch to celebrate promotion, not Red Stars' had we had hoped (an expected, let it be said). In reality Red Star were never going to get promoted, despite leading the table at one time in February. Mismanagement and ineptitude sealed Red Stars' fate, and with possible liquidation of the club hanging over their heads, what does the future hold for the club ? The CFA at best, but the Parisian DH appears more and more likely. Some players will find an escape route : Fabrice Bruneau is a wonderful goalkeeper with a couple of seasons left in him yet at a decent level of football; Abdoulaye Soumare will surely have a future in front of him, given his livewire performance tonight, and Gomes-Varela could follow suit. As for the rest, take your pick, nothing outstanding but potential for finding something in the Paris region, surely.
A sad end indeed to one of Frances' best-loved clubs, and here's hoping that the ones who got the club in this state can sleep at night with a clear conscience. Au revoir, Red Star.
