Red Star - Arménienne
Red Star press to no avail

NO SIXTH TIME...

Red Stars' name will not be engraved for a sixth time on the Coupe de France after losing 2-0 at Bauer on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Visitors Arménienne came and did a perfect DH job on Red Star, winning the tie with first half goals from the evergreen Eric Akoun and Fatmi.
They say that one man doesn't make a team, but the contribution made by Akoun was enormous, and he can quite rightly be proud of his achievement in turning round a moribund Issy club last year into a formidable outfit that could more than hold its own in the CFA 2. Coach Thierry Boquet, newly arrived from relegated Versailles, has assembled a very efficient team for this season. Arménienne went at Red Star from the word go but the green weathered the storm as they did against Saint-Omer last weekend. However, instead of capitalising on their chances, Red Stars' forwards were guilty of some apalling finishing, and coupled with a determined defence that refused to be broken, Arménienne held out. On the half hour the clumsy Tounkara upended an opponent, and from the free kick out wide Akoun measured his shot to perfection, the ball looping over the stranded Yann Bell. (0-1). Red Star countered, but five minutes later a long cross field pass was missed by Diomande, the ball was headed back into the danger area and Fatmi pounced to double the lead. Two down at home to a stubborn DH outfit spelled trouble for Red Star.
After the pause it was virtually one-way traffic. Budoc was replaced by Abdallah and Red Star took on a new dimension. But, with the excellent Dickenson outstanding in defence, Arménienne refused to capitulate. Doumbya missed the unmissable and shots from Aklouche, N'Simba and Yessad all failed to find the target. Ngako dominated his area preventing crosses from reaching Benmesmoudi. Finally Red Star were unable to break down the white wall and the cup run was over for another season. Hugely disappointing, but Red Star will have to pick themselves up for next weeks' difficult trip to Rouen.
