Red Star line up at Chantilly

BELL BRILLIANT AS RED STAR LABOUR TO WIN

Red Star made heavy weather of this vital win over struggling Chantilly and had it not been for the goalkeeping brilliance of Yann Bell and the goalscoring opportunism of Azzedine Benmesmoudi then the scoreline might have been different.
As they did against Saint-Omer earlier this season, Red Star played second fiddle to their opponents in the opening skirmishes, only to hit back in the most deadly of fashions. Chantilly, desperately lacking confidence and needing points to arrest a rather alarming slump that has taken them from top to the foot of the table dominated the early minutes, and indeed Red Star faield to muster an attack or a decent move right up to the twenty fifth minute when some enterprising approach play and a decent through ball fed Doumbya who held off one challenge to release the ball to BENMESMOUDI whose twenty five yard out shot was struck sweetly over the despairing Desnoyelles in the Chantilly goal. (1-0)
From then on Red Star looked to be going on to crush Chantilly, but the finishing was not up to the usual high standards. Meanwhile Chantilly settled down and virtually monopolised posession of the ball. But some dire finishing and Yann Bells' dominance of the air and his area kept Red Star in front.
Second half much in the same vein as the first, Davidson was replaced by Aklouche and the young winger looked a tad more lively and Red Star started to construct again. Benmesmoudi was taken off exhausted to be replaced by Franck Gueï in a forward role, and Chantilly started to feel under pressure again. But the best chance came at the end of the game for Chantilly. For once Bell was beaten and Red Star had to thank Kaba Diomande for hacking the ball off the line to safety. Doumbya felt that he had good cause for a penalty when he went sprawling in the Chantilly area, but the referee was really too far away to award the penalty.
A day for defenders, on an uneven pitch in freezing cold conditions. Red Star missed the creative genius of Abdallah in midfield, but today was a day less for artistry and more for the industriousness of Budoc, N'Simba and Hammami. Tounkara and Yessad hald things together well at the back and Diomande saved the win for the visitors. Up front Doumbya worked hard and maybe deserved his penalty, but out wide Baldé and Davidson had quiet games. Still, at the end of the season the four points for the win will be remembered more than the laborious performance that earned them.
