MISSED CHANCES PROVE COSTLY

Red Star put a stop to their run of two defeats but will be kicking themselves for not having taken all of the points. An injury-time equaliser from Auxerres' Vadocz earned a point for the visitors after youngster Christophe Haguy had given Red Star a deserved lead.
Auxerre arrived in Paris with only fourteen players and no substitute goalkeeper - as it happens this might have turned out to be critical as a first-half incident proved. Goalkeeper Veron came out of his area and appeared to have handled the ball, but unlike Liverpools' goalie against Bolton hours before, who was punished by a free-kick, the referre ignored the incident and the Auxerre 'keeper was allowed to continue the game. His presence later in the game proved to be vital for Auxerre as he made up for an earlier error by preventing Red Star scoring a second which would have probably killed the game off.
Khaled Kemas was also denied a goal in the first half but apart from that very few chances to write about.
After the pause, the clouds gathered over Stade Bauer and with only six minutes gone, the heavens opened, thunder and lightning and after consultation with the two captains, the referee led the twenty two actors from the field of play. The delay was to last half an hour - with some having already gone home thinking that the match would be abandoned. No, the game resumed and minutes later youngster Christophe Haguy, making his debut for Red Star kept on chasing after a ball played from a one-two with Rogin. The visitors' keeper appeared to have got there first, but the ball bounced out of his hands and Christophe, who was with the under 18s last term, slipped the ball into the empty net. Red Stars' first goal since the away trip to Rouen.
Afterwards Red Star really should have buried the game, but Auxerres' Veron made up for his earlier gaffe by making an equisite save from Rogin, denying Kemas in a one-on-one and making the angle difficult for another young debutant, Elysée Mbanza who put the ball just the wrong side of an upright.
The referee announced five minutes of stoppage time - where that came from heaven knows, and Auxerre stepped on the gas, putting some real pressure on the home defence. As the seconds ticked down Kaba Diomande went over on the slippery surface whilst putting the ball out for a corner. He hobbled off and made his way around the pitch. Unable to reenter the fray, this left Red Star at ten and Auxerre had a man free due to the numerical superiority - occasional first-teamer Kristian Vadocz unmarked to lash home from fifteen yards. By the time Diomande was back on the pitch the referee had blown for full time and Auxerre celebrated the draw whilst Red Star were left to rue their missed chances. Without a win in five games and only two goals scored, the bottom of the table is now only four points away and with a tricky trip to high-fliers Bois-Guillaume, October too could be a very difficult period.
