KEMAS THE HERO AS RED STAR ALMOST BLOW IT

Red Star had striker Khaled Kemas back from injury and a return to goalscoring form coincided with Red Star scoring their first goals since the 2-2 draw at Bauer against Rennes. The first half was utter rubbish, so let's just forget about that, and the fact that it took the home side twenty five minutes to get a shot on target, in fact any kind of shot, on the the visitors' goal. Yoann Djidonou was the more active of the two custodians, it has to be said.
On a muddy bog of a pitch, Red Star just couldn't get their game into gear, most of the play coming through long balls pumped forwards from defence. Ten minutes after the break, Vincent Fourneuf lumped another ball upfield, Marquet brought the ball down, and laid it off into the path of Khaled Kemas. One of Red Stars' better performers, Kemas found sufficient space in the Quevilly defence to launch a powerful drive past Farnolle (1-0). After a series of goalless draws (Villemomble, Moissy, Pacy) Red Star had once again found the route to goal and the fans duly celebrated the moment. Red Star one up after a spell of domination, what could go wrong ?
What went wrong were two moments of defensive abberations; firstly Red Star were unable to clear their lines and Buchon was left unmarked to fire a low drive under Djidonou (1-1), then one minute later Lacomat and Diawara got in each others way enabling Quevillys' Mbessa Akono to receive a through ball, evade Tounkara whom ended up flat on his arse in the mud before rifling the ball into the net. (1-2). From a comfortble position Red Star looked to be facing defeat.
Still, with half an hour remaining the game was not lost, but given the state of Red Stars' play, things were beginning to look grim. Kangulungu injected a sense of urgency into affairs, but the play was scrappy, uncoordinated and Quevilly held firm. The pitch was turgid, the state of play too, and it would take something special to change the situation. In the event this turned out to be Kemas' second goal, almost as splendid as the first; a turn and a shot drilled cleanly past the Quevilly goalkeeper. (2-2)
Red Star pressed forwards for a third, but nearly blew it as Quevilly hit back on the counter attack. Firstly Djidonou made a fine save before Tounkara made amends for his earlier slip by making a fine tackle on a visitors' forward.
Rubbish on a terrible surface. But no excuses, Red Star should have taken this game by the scruff of the neck against the bottom club. Instead they let the visitors' settle and despite taking a fine lead, almost blew it as the defence went walkabout. On the positive side Kemas was exemplary, two fine goals and a huge workrate that unsettled the visitors' defence. Too often, though, the midfield was AWOL, absent and either the defence were hoofing long balls forwards or Kemas had to track back himself to fetch the ball. Lefort put in an enormous amount of work as well and Marquet wasn't half as bad as some of the crowd made him out. Always available, finding space and probing, but let down by a lack of technique on an unfavourable pitch. Kangulungu looked out of position in midfield and Ouattara rarely posed any kind of attacking threat. As the crowd sang bring back last seasons' players, it was the two old boys in central defence whom really should have avoided conceding the two goals, whilst another "new boy" Kemas scored the two goals that avoided defeat. Quite what one or two more of last sesons' squad would have added to the product on offer Saturday is open to debate. The ones to bring back which may or may not have made a difference are mostly injured and the ones still at the club were dropped following poor performances this season.
Bauer is a grim place at the moment with the roof missing off the east stand, the pitch a potato field and some very ordinary sporting performances. Now follows a long fight against relegation....
